Same Storm, Different Boats

Caregiving isn't always smooth sailing.

Caregiving is a lot like preparing for the day’s weather. You make decisions based on the information you have and act accordingly. The healthcare teams are like meteorologists. They predict what they can based on patterns and information gathered over time, but much like the weather, a person’s health can vary greatly from someone else’s based on known and unknown factors.

Caregivers are at the center of this weather pattern, begging for an accurate forecast. As someone’s caregiver, it’s not a matter of wanting and needing to know if a storm is coming- it’s a matter of when that storm will arrive. Anyone with experience on this journey knows you need a boat.

There are key factors in every caregiving situation that form the storms we face. The variation occurs in the size of our boats. In the US, caregivers find themselves in rough seas floating on driftwood or rowing a canoe, steering a sailboat, or navigating a yacht. Your vessel is determined by where you live, your healthcare access, and your income.

Where you are in the storm is also determined by these things. The waves are higher if you don’t have health insurance. They crash harder if you’re not financially stable. They hit more often if you are navigating this course on your own without a support system.

Caregivers may be weathering the same storm but they certainly don’t all have the same gear. The Carefullist is working to change that.
